Introduction to Blackjack

While black jack is a casino game that is popular all over the world, it is most famous in the United States due to media coverage and cinema. It is a card game with an objective of beating the dealer's hand with a of 21, or as close to 21 as possible, without going over.

The Basics

Blackjack is played with a 52-card deck, but most casinos use more than one deck shuffled together called a shoe. The game is played on a specified table and the betting limits and rules should be posted on or very near the table. In order to gamble, players are required to purchase chips from the house in common denominations, but home games can be played for pennies, matches, gumdrops or nearly anything imaginable.

Placing Bets and Winning

Before any cards are dealt, players must place their bets. The minimum and maximum bets must always be adhered to, and players can choose any denomination between these numbers. If the player has a natural--or a two-card 21, the player is paid out two to one. If the player's score is beaten by the dealer or if the player busts, the bet is taken by the dealer. If the player wins by beating the dealer's score with anything but a natural, they are paid out one to one.

These are the basic rules of blackjack; there are far more details that can be studied at length in free online blackjack rooms. Players should heed these basic rules and follow the rules of the specific venue, as well.
